A teenager climbing on the roof of Bucholz High School in Gainesville, Florida ended up plummeting 40 feet through a skylight.
News outlets report the 19-year-old was taken to a hospital with serious injuries after he fell about 40 feet (12 meters) through the ceiling window Friday evening.
County Sheriff’s Lt. Brett Rhodenizer says the teen was among a group of at least eight people who went to the roof during the match at Buchholz High in Gainesville.
County schools spokeswoman Jackie Johnson says several people were arrested on trespassing charges, including some students.
Rhodenizer says they were on the roof to retrieve a cellphone that someone had thrown near the skylight. Deputies didn’t identify the man who fell.
“Sounds like, according to our investigation, one of them threw a cell phone up to the absolute upper level of the gymnasium. Four of these individuals went up to the top level and started walking across the roof. The individual who fell through stepped into a skylight and crashed about 40 feet down onto the gym floor below,” explained Lt. Brett Rhodenizer, the public information officer for the Alachua County Sheriff’s Office.
