A suspected shoplifter being chased by police was caught on camera shooting at the officer while running away from him. Video has emerged of the moments when Charles Edward Purvis, 23, turned around and fired his gun at the officer pursuing him in the middle of an Albuquerque, New Mexico, Walmart parking lot.
The video, which was captured by an officer’s lapel camera, shows police trying to talk to Purvis before he exited the Walmart.
Purvis immediately takes off running across the parking lot. The officer wearing the camera then chases him through the parking lot.
As the officer is close to catching up to him, Purvis pulls out a handgun and shoots at the officer. Purvis can be seen speeding off into the distance as the officer stops, recovers quickly and draws his gun. It has since been revealed that the officer Purvis shot at had only graduated from the police academy 10 weeks prior.
Authorities eventually tracked him down to an empty home and used gas to force him outside.
Purvis now faces multiple charges including assault with a deadly weapon and assault with intent to commit a violent felony against a peace officer.
No one was injured during the incident.
