Fearless pokies pensioner takes down an armed robber wielding a machete with a single punch

A fearless pokie player has taken down an armed robber with a single punch. Two men wielding a machete and a metal pole smashed the window of a gaming venue on Clubhouse Place in St Albans, north-west of Melbourne, at about 11.15pm on November 12.

CCTV footage shows one of the men swing the machete at a heroic male patron, striking him in the cheek. The pokie player, aged in his 70s, then turns and suddenly punches the attempted thief in the head, knocking him to the ground instantly. The patron suffered minor cuts to his head.

No cash was taken from the venue and the armed men fled the scene empty-handed. Police described one of the attackers as having a solid build, medium height, of Maori or Pacific Islander appearance with a New Zealand accent.

The second man is described as having a slim build, medium height with an Australian accent. Detectives claim the attempted robbery may be linked to at least three other crimes in the area.
