State Of Emergency Declared After 52+ Polar Bears Invade Russian Town

A state of emergency has been declared after more than 50 polar bears invaded Novaya Zemlya, a Russian archipelago stretching into the Arctic Ocean.

Officials in the Arkhangelsk region declared a state of emergency because of the invasion. Thinning sea ice has driven 52+ polar bears ashore.

TASS reported that the animals had tried to enter buildings and residential quarters. They were seen chasing residents, staring down dogs and feasting on garbage.

Parents are afraid to let the children go to school or kindergarten.

Russia’s environmental watchdog has withheld licenses for shooting them. A team of experts is being sent to the island to advice residents on other measures to discourage the bears.

Local officials have complained that vehicle and dog patrols have not been effective as polar bears feel secure and no longer react.
